Step 5

THE INTERVIEW AND HIRING DECISION

Interview Format

TSA interviews are structured, competency-based, and designed to evaluate your judgment, communication skills, and alignment with TSA’s mission. You will typically meet with a two- to three-person interview panel and answer a mix of behavioral questions such as “Tell me about a time when…,” along with scenario-based questions that assess security judgment and stress management. Every response is graded using a strict scoring rubric, and the tone remains professional and neutral throughout the process. Interviewers read from prepared questions and document your answers verbatim to ensure fairness and minimize bias.

Using the STAR Method

TSA expects responses to be structured and concise, for which, the STAR Method is the most recommended format:

  1. S – Situation Describe the context.
  2. T – Task Explain what needed to be done.
  3. A – Action Walk through the specific steps you took.
  4. R – Result Share the outcome and what you learned.

STAR Response Builder

However, the candidate may use this template for practice:

  1. Situation: What was happening?
  2. Task: What responsibility or challenge did you face?
  3. Action: What exactly did YOU do step by step?
  4. Result: What improved? What did you accomplish?
    What did you learn?
